Chances are you are considering taking your mobile phone abroad. No wonder as it's a great way to stay in touch, however, don't pack your mobile phone before you have read this comprehensive guide on taking mobile phones abroad.

Mobile Phones On Holiday ...

Mobile phones are pretty much taken on holiday by everyone nowadays. However, don't just assume your phone will work as you need to be enabled for 'International roaming' and some Countries require a different handset to that used in the UK.

Read this helpful guide on everything you need to know when travelling with your mobile phone.

Preparing To Leave ...

Contact your Network provider with the following questions if you are taking your mobile phone on holiday:

  • Ask your Network provider to activate your mobile for 'International roaming'. It can take up to 14 days to set up so don't leave it to the last minute.

  • Ask if your handset will work in the Country you are travelling to - for instance, if you are travelling to America you will need a tri-band handset.

  • Ask how much calls will be on International roaming. It's also worth confirming these charges before you leave as they can change at short notice.

  • Ask if there are any deals available for overseas travel with your mobile, or deals specifically relating to the Country you are travelling to.
You can contact your Network provider by using the numbers below:

  UK Network Providers
  O2 0870 225 7879
  Orange 0800 079 0006
T-Mobile 0845 412 5000
Three 08707 330 333
Virgin 0845 6000 789
Vodafone 08700 700 191
Tesco Mobile 0845 301 44 55

Using Your Mobile A Lot ...

Some tariffs can offer cheaper calls abroad for a monthly fee. Check to see how much this would cost and how long you would have to be committed for, as if you are not a frequent traveller this may not work out as cheap in the long run for you.

Sometimes it can be cheaper to use an alternative International SIM card for overseas use. These are available to buy at international airports and some UK retailers. Do note however that some international SIM cards expire after a certain amount of time - check before you buy to see that it's after you have returned from your travels.

You can buy a SIM card from SIM for Travel, click this link:

And remember to take an electrical adapter for your mobile phone charger so you can continue using your mobile after the battery has run out.

Arrived ...

You've arrived. Simply turn your phone on when allowed to do so at your arrivals destination. You will automatically be locked onto a local phone transmitter that routes all your calls via the UK - here's how...

... say you are in France. Your mobile phone on holiday still 'behaves' as if you are in Britain. So, if you are given a mobile number by a friend who is also in France and promise to call them back it will cost a fortune because it's routed via the UK. That's a massive 1,800 miles! What's more, your friend who has a British mobile will also be paying for receiving the call.

Important Contact Numbers...

Put the following important contact numbers into your phone before you leave for your holiday:

  • Telephone number of your Hotel / Tour Operator

  • Telephone number of the nearest British Embassy to where you are going to be staying

  • Your travel insurance provider's contact numbers

Important Numbers - Government Offices and Agencies
  Foreign & Commonwealth Office Enquiries +44 (0) 207 008 1500
  Services for Briton’s overseas +44 (0) 207 008 0210
Travel Advice +44 (0) 845 850 2829

Overseas Security For Your Mobile Phone ...

Before you travel make a note of your mobile's IMEI/serial number along with your mobile telephone number and the telephone number of your Network provider's customer services (including UK dialling code). Make sure these are not kept in the same place as your mobile.

Should the worst happen and your mobile is lost or stolen you will be able to contact your Network provider back in the UK to block your phone and/or SIM card. Check in advance if you need to provide additional information in order to get the phone blocked, such as a password or any other information they might need.

You may also want to consider taking out travel insurance that covers your mobile phone - most polices do not cover mobiles as standard.
