If you are worried about any potential Bristol Airport health risks when flying read this guide. Here we detail in-flight health problems that, it should be noted, very few passengers ever suffer from including Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and motion sickness.

Bristol Airport - Health Risks When Flying ...

It should be noted that very few travellers ever suffer any serious in-flight health risks.

However, here we give details on the in-flight health risks, such as DVT, motion sickness and cabin pressure, that can be experienced, including their symptoms and ways in which to prevent or ease the problem.

In-Flight Health ...

When travelling by plane a few passengers experience health problems. These problems are mostly found in those passengers travelling long haul, rather than short haul, or those passengers who are already of ill health.

DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis ...

About DVT?

DVT is when the blood clots within one of the deep veins of the pelvis, thigh or calf because the blood is dehydrated or has become sluggish through immobility and cramped conditions for long periods of time. Persons suffering from recent trauma like child birth or abdominal surgery and heart disease are more prone than other passengers.

Persons At Risk from DVT?

  • Persons over 40
  • Family or a past history of DVT
  • Recent trauma or surgery, especially abdominal or leg surgery, or injury to the knees or hips
  • Pregnancy or recent child birth
  • Cancer or those receiving certain cancer treatments
  • Circulation and heart problems
  • Obesity
Avoid DVT

  • Drink lots of water to stay well hydrated. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated products before and during the flight
  • Wear loose, baggy clothing
  • Stretch out the muscles of your legs and feet
  • Leave the underneath of the seat in front clear so you can stretch out
  • Get up and walk around the cabin every hour or so
  • Wear compression stockings - ‘flight socks’ – particularly important if you are in a high-risk category
DVT Symptoms

DVT, whilst uncomfortable is not the biggest problem, the biggest problem is when a piece of the blood clot, called a pulmonary embolus, breaks off and travels to the right side of the heart, causing heart problems or even heart attack.

Sometimes there are no symptoms of DVT and this is what makes Deep Vein Thrombosis so dangerous. However, some people suffer from:

  • Aching and soreness in the calf
  • Swelling in the ankles or calf
  • Modern fever and generally feeling unwell
  • Symptoms might not start for a few days or even weeks.
If You Suspect DVT?

Go and see a doctor straight away if you suspect you have DVT.

If you are away at the time contact your airline or holiday rep.

In most cases treatment for DVT is quite simple.

Cabin pressure...

Illness can be felt on board a plane as the cabin is pressurized at a much lower pressure than we're use to at sea level.

The low pressure means there's slightly less oxygen in circulating air, and that's it much dryer.

  • Your ears are painful during take-off or landing - chew or swallow frequently
  • Any persons taking medicines should make sure they are packed in the hand luggage
  • Alcohol has 2 to 3 times the effect of an alcoholic drink on land
  • Avoid dehydration by not having alcohol before and during the flight and drink lots of water

Common Motion sickness...

Motion sickness is the most common of all in-flight health problems but it's harmless.

  • You could request a window seat
  • Or one over the wings
  • Avoid any alcohol at least 24hrs before flight
  • Keep your seat belt fastened throughout the flight
  • Some natural remedies can help:
    • Vitamin B6 alleviate dizziness, which leads to nausea by promoting the normal function of the nervous system
    • Magnesium can reduce stomach acidity and stress
    • Peppermint can prevent vomiting plus has antispasmodic properties
    • Ginkgo Bilboa is useful for chronic dizziness or light-headedness
    • Ginger extract can help prevent nausea
  • Consult a doctor if you know you suffer badly from motion sickness

Flying When On Medication ...

If you are taking prescribed medication make sure you pack such medicines in your hand luggage. Also include enough for any delays that might occur.

  • Carry more medication than you need for delays
  • Diabetes or epilepsy suffers must carry their notification and ID card
  • Advise the airline you are travelling with of your illness
  • Check you have had the correct vaccinations

Jet Lag ...

Jet lag is simply when your body clock is out of sync with the actual time and therefore you want to sleep at lunchtime, for example, instead of at night time.

The effects of jet lag are worse sometimes when multiple time zones have been travelled through, or when travelling east.

Try and avoid jet lag, and ease the symptoms, by applying some of these tips:

  • Eat at a time that more closes matches the time of the Country you are travelling to
  • Set your watch to the new time as soon as you take off
  • Eat small meals and drink lots of fluids, although not alcohol
  • Caffeinated drinks can help mask fatigue during the days after flying
  • Try some of the natural sleeping pills
  • If you really do need a nap during the day, take one, especially if driving
  • Try the herb Ginseng, used for centuries to fight fatigue.
