Preparing To Leave ...

Take 'on board' our top tips for holiday preparation and you can be rest assured that you'll be boarding that plane with peace of mind that you've left everything in order like cancelled the milk, your bags meet the luggage allowance and your home is secure.

Tips - Before You Leave Home ...

Think carefully about what you might need to do before you leave your home unattended for days, weeks or more whilst you are away on holiday. The last thing you want to add to your post holiday blues is gone off food in the fridge or wilting pot plants, not to mention the possibility of returning to a burgled house.

Listed below are some general tips you should think about before you leave your house:
  • Cancel any milk and newspapers deliveries

  • Don't order anything that requires a signature when it is delivered. Recorded Delivery for example will be returned to the Post Office, and after one week returned to sender

  • Change any meetings you might have planned

  • Ask a good neighbour or local member of your family or friend to remove post from the doorstep and water your plants

  • Cook, freeze or bin any perishable items in your fridge

  • Make sure all your plug sockets are switched off at the mains

  • Reduce your central heating temperature if you are travelling in the Winter so you're not wasting energy and money. If travelling in the Summer months, switch it right off

  • Make sure someone trusted is looking after your pets and is familiar with their routine. Or, if they are going to a cattery or kennel pack some of their favourite things like treats and toys

Home Security Tips ...

Few of us do, but we must look after our homes when we are away. For the majority of us, our home and its contents form our most valuable asset, as well as the invaluable sentimental attachment they hold. After all, almost half of all break-ins happen when a flat or house is left empty.

Follow these easy to use top ten security tips to protect your home whilst you are away.

  Top Ten Security Tips
1, Automatic Lighting Make your home look lived in whilst you are away by confusing any potential burglars with light timers that go off throughout the day and night.
  2. Post Arrange for post and free newspapers etc. to be collected up off your doorstep by local friends or neighbours regularly.

Or, arrange for Royal Mail's Keepsafe service that stores your post for up to two months while you are away.

3. Deliveries Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries so they don't build up on your doorstep.
4. Baggage Tags: Don't advertise that you are away on your luggage label - don't fill in your home address until you are checking in for your return flight.
5. House Checking: Ask family or friends to check on your home from time to time. Get them to open and close various curtains and to park on your drive. Maybe even a neighbour could park their spare car on your drive for a few days.

Make sure you've left your contact details with either your family, friends or neighbours so that they can contact you in case of an emergency.
6. Neighbourhood Watch: Think about joining a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in your area.  Visit their website at www.neighbourhoodwatch.net to find out more.
7. Valuable Items: if you have valuable items or important paperwork, consider leaving them with friends, or locking them in your bank's safe.

Don't encourage burglars - make sure high value items such as televisions, stereos and DVD players cannot be seen from outside the property.

Check that your home and contents insurance covers all of your valuables before you travel, just in case.
8. Alarm:  Make a trusted neighbour or local friend or family member a key holder should the alarm go off.

And make sure your alarm is set when you leave your property.
9. Outdoor Storage: Think about putting valuables normally stored in your shed, like golf clubs, bikes or tools, in your house whilst you are away.
10. Locks: Do a check that all of your doors and windows are securely locked.

Many local police forces offer a home security check and they will come out and check your home and suggest security improvements.

Pack Those Bags ...

Whilst you might be tempted to pack all bar the kitchen sink you can't. There are weight limits on luggage allowances to consider.

Luggage allowances vary from Airline to Airline with most displaying the weight allowed on your ticket.

Should you need to carry more luggage, or weight, than allowed contact the airline in advance of travel so you don't waste time or be inconvenienced at the airport.

The same applies if travelling with unusual or outsize items of baggage, you must inform the Airline you are travelling with or the travel agent that you have booked your trip through.

As a rule the weight of an individual bag is a maximum of 32kg (70lbs). Should your bag weigh more than that you'll be required to re-pack your luggage into smaller bags so that the weight is distributed more evenly.  And if you have to travel with the excess weight you will be charged a hefty fee.

At check-in you will be asked a number of security questions relating to your luggage like who packed your bags, what's inside etc. For more information on restricted items that must not be packed in your hand luggage or main luggage, visit the Security section of this website
