Thinking About Going Away ... |
|
|
|
|
| |
| When you start thinking about going away do some basic research before you start trying to get a good deal on a flight. To get a good deal you need to be armed with as much information about your trip as possible - where and when do you want to go, from which airport, for how long etc. |

Before Booking A Flight... |
|
|
|
| |
|
| |
|
| |
|
| |
| Prices for Bristol flights change every day, and can vary depending on where you are looking i.e. the Internet or in travel agents. |
|
| |
| |
Do shop around, especially using the Internet. However, if you get a good deal quickly don't be afraid to book it. If you really do want to try just a couple more avenues first think about asking to put the flight on hold.
To get a really great deal when buying flights for Bristol Airport try and be flexible. Can you travel on another day - often weekends are much more expensive. Can you fly early or late - middle of the day flights can be more. Can you flight to and from remote airports as these are often cheaper too. |
| |
| If ringing travel agents, or airlines direct, call either early or late so they are less busy and can help you as much as they can. Also, be cheeky - ask if they know about any flight deals yet to be released that could be worth waiting for. |
| |
| Nested Ticket Option |
| |
One option of a cheaper flight ticket is buying what's called nested tickets.
These are normally bought through a travel agent and only work when a regular midweek fare is over twice the price of an excursion fare (includes a Saturday stopover) to the same destination.
For example, £150 for a flight from Heathrow to Belfast return going out on a Monday and coming back on the Friday of the same week but you can find a return that requires you to stay for a weekend and is priced £75 or less, it is worth buying a nested ticket.
However, buy a £75 excursion return ticket leaving on Monday and coming back late in the next week. Then buy another £75 excursion return ticket with the outgoing flight from Belfast on the Friday of your return to Heathrow. The return journey of this second ticket should be dated early in the next week.
So you get two return flight, which you can nest for future travel, if you know you are due to be going away later in the year, and to where. |
| |
| Split Ticket Option |
| |
The split ticket option means that instead of flying direct you break up your journey buy changing at an interim airport.
Again, you are most likely to need to book this sort of flight option through a travel agent. |
| |
| Low Cost Airlines |
| |
You must book very early with low cost airlines to get their best fare price. If you book just before your travel date your fare will be quite expensive, not a dissimilar price to more traditional airlines.
Always remember the flight prices are for single and not return journeys. And also remember that airport taxes are still valid that can increase the price of a, say for example, £1 advertised fare.
Always book online to save money. |

Delays & Increased Legroom ... |
|
|
|
| |
|
| |
| Delays are frustrating and no legroom is uncomfortable. Try some of these tips: |
|
| |
|
| |
- Many major tour operators let you pre-book your airline seats, often however for a small premium. Such supplements are available for in-flight meals also
- See if you can find out what type of aircraft you're travelling on, find a seat plan online and see if you can book your preferred seats
- Flights are less likely to be delayed if leaving first or last thing at night. Also, those flights flying direct.

|
|

|
| |
Upgrades are every traveller's idea of heaven but however are rare. You are most likely to get an upgrade if you are bumped onto another flight.
If you agree to be bumped onto the next available flight, as passenger calculations have gone wrong, you could try asking on the condition you get upgraded
Normally, if delays are more than several hours you'll be offered travel vouchers or cash.
If the delay is less you'll be offered a phone card, a food voucher and even a temporary pass into the executive lounge. |

Travel agents are paid a commission from airlines for your booking so bargain hard to get a good price - both want your booking!
Also as about deals that haven't been released yet.
Always check the exact details of any quotes given by travel agents - ask for hotel names and airline carriers. |
| |
| Deal Direct |
| |
- See if you can get discounts from any contacts your larger employer may have, or a union you are a member of
|
| |
- Booking direct will always save you money Vs a booking through a travel agent
|
| |
- If you act as a courier, by carrying something in your luggage for a responsible business, you can save money on flights but you do have to be flexible about when and where you are travelling to
|
| |
- European city breaks are idea to book on the Internet and save money - there's a huge choice of airlines and accommodation providers
