As stated by the British Airports Authority each individual airlines is responsible for the security an management of its passenger's luggage.
Should your luggage go missing during your flight you need to report it immediately to the airline when you land at the lost baggage desk at the airport. |

- Report your missing baggage to the Lost Baggage desk in the airport.

| You will need to give a description of your lost luggage. Then you'll be allocated a tracking number so you can monitor the progress of your baggage either online or by phone. |

| The airline may request you to list the contents of your luggage and may ask for original receipts. The airline then acts like an insurance company and offers you compensation, however it's likely to be less than the amount you are claiming for. |

| Bags have to be missing for approximately 21 days until they are officially considered as lost. |
| |
| Once the 21 days has passed you might be entitled to compensation. When accessing a claim most airlines say they're limited to payments of around £800 per passengers, as stated by the Montreal Convention. |

| It might be your airline wants you to claim for the lost luggage through your travel insurance policy, however, some policies don't cover luggage stowed in the hold. It is down to the airline you were travelling with to accept responsibility. |

| Non-direct Flights |

| If you are on connecting flights and your luggage goes missing you are allowed to lodge a claim against any one of the airlines, however, they will of course each blame the other one. You may need to track your luggage through each transit. |

| Limited Release Tags |

| Limited Release Tags, known as LRT are attached quite often to musical instruments or sporting equipment and pushchairs as they are intended to remove any responsibility from the airline. However, if your airline has attached an LRT and refuses your claim remind them they are in breach of the Montreal Convention as they have carried your items. |

It is very difficult to prove that individual items have been stolen from your luggage if your bags have been broken into. It's difficult because you have to prove these goods were packed in the suitcase to start with.
If you are claiming for certain valuable goods like cameras and jewellery you may find your airline's T&Cs state they do not cover for such items. Because of this you should try, where possible, either to not take with you such valuable items or carry them in your hand luggage. |

- Make a full list of everything you've packed in your suitcase so you can list to the airline what has gone missing.
- In case your luggage label falls off put your address on a piece of paper inside your cases.
- You could always fly your bags out separately if they contain very important belongings, with a company such as Flymycase.
- Where you can hold onto your receipts for the items you've packed for your trip.
- Put all valuables like your jewellery, cameras and mobiles in your hand luggage.
- Always travel with travel insurance - just in case!
- By using brightly coloured baggage could prevent others from mistaking your cases for their own. It might also deter thieves!
