Each city in the world, over 120 years ago, set their clocks to their own local time. This was done by setting clocks to when the sun was at its highest in the sky, as visible from each individual city.
So those cities where were still extremely close to one another still set their clocks differently i.e. it would be 6:00PM in New York City and 6:12PM in Boston.
This system worked well for many, many years. However, soon transportation and modern communication meant this system became awkward and inefficient to use.
So after some thought Sir Sandford Fleming, a railway planner and engineer from Canada came up with the idea of time zones in the late 1870s.
After much finalisation this new World time zones was in use by 1883.
The idea was popular and in 1884 the whole World agreed to uniformed World time zones, at a conference in Washington, D.C. The World was divided into 24 time zones, each zone a long strip from the North Pole to the South Pole, all about 15 degrees longitude in width and about one hour difference in time.
This World time is still in use today in nearly all of the World's Countries.
